A: Yes.

A: You dont, but if you want the full experience you can try using a Dynamic Lights mod and the Glowing Totem resource pack.
Q: Does it work with any version?
A: It works with any version that has (obviously) the lantern. Maybe in older versions can show that red warning sign, but dont worry about that.
