Isle of Berk Variant Loader Mod (1.18.2) – Create and Customize Dragon Variants

Isle of Berk Variant Loader Mod allows you to create and customize dragon variants in the Isle of Berk mod using resource packs and data packs. You can change textures, models, animations, and even add glowing effects. It is mainly designed for users who already know how to work with resource/data packs.

Gameplay Changes

• All dragons support variant inheritance (can be disabled in config)

• Adjust rider/passenger positions

Customization via Resource Packs

• Replace models, textures, and animations per variant
• Add glowing layers to textures
• Redirect models for dragons and eggs

Config Options:

• Client
  • disable_glowing – Turn off glowing textures
  • disable_named_variants – Disable variant switching via nametag
  • display_original_variant_name – Show real variant name in tooltip
  • generate_translations – Auto-generate English names (for developers)
  • log_model_redirects – Log model changes for debugging
• Common
  • inheritance_chance – Chance for offspring to inherit parent variant
  • assign_egg_variant_on_breeding – Assign variant when breeding
  • assign_egg_variant_on_placed – Assign variant when placing egg
  • log_variant_spawns – Debug variant spawning

Important Notes

• Do not include default textures in your pack (can cause conflicts)
• File names must be lowercase (Minecraft is case-sensitive)
• JSON files must be valid (use online validators if needed)

Common Use Cases

• Nametag-only variant
  • Do not add spawn settings in data pack
• Spawn-only variant
  • Set breeding_weight to 0
• Breeding-only variant
  • Set weight to 0
• Disable nametag access
  • Set nametag_accessible to false

Command Example

• Summon a specific variant:

/summon ~ ~ ~ isleofberk:dragon_id {VariantName:name}

Notes About Spawning

• Variants do not automatically spawn in biomes
• Biome restriction only limits where a variant can appear
• If a dragon cannot spawn in that biome, you must obtain it via breeding or hatching
• Some dragons (like Speed Stingers) spawn only in structures

Limitations

• Cannot add new animations (they are hardcoded)
