Starlight Mod (1.20.4, 1.20.1) – Rewriting the Vanilla Light Engine

Starlight Mod rewrites the light engine to fix lighting performance and lighting errors. Starlight can be installed either on the dedicated server or client. It is not required to be installed on both sides. If you have Starlight on the server, clients can use Vanilla/Starlight to connect. Likewise, if you have Starlight on the client, you can connect to Vanilla/Starlight servers.

Starlight was developed for higher scale dedicated servers, as they suffered performance problems due to how ungodly slow the light engine was. The only solution was to create an extremely invasive mod which rewrote the entire light engine.

Features:

The graph below shows how much time the light engine was active while generating 10404 chunks:

• Tested via LightBench.
• World seed: vanillakekw.
• CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X.

Below is a graph detailing how long light updates took for breaking/placing a block on a large platform at y = 254 down to a large platform at y = 0:

• World is just a flat world with bedrock at y = 0 and grass at y = 254.
