Squidless Mod 1.7.10 fixes a vanilla bug which causes Squids to spawn then despawn instantly when the player is too high above the ocean – causing a large amount of lag.
A number of people have mentioned a bug where if you get too high above water it causes Squids to start spawning and unspawning repeatedly which causes huge amounts of unnecessary server/client spam causing lag. This server side mod prevents squids spawning in regions where they would instantly despawn.
