Which build do you need?

This mod ships a separate file for every mod loader and every version of the game. Pick both, then download — the wrong build installs fine and then does nothing in the game.

Mod loader

Minecraft version

⬇ Download for 1.21.1 · Fabric⬇ Download for 1.21.1 · NeoForge
I don't know my version or loader
Open the Minecraft launcher and look at the profile you play on — it names both, like fabric-loader-1.21.4. The version also shows in the bottom-right corner of the game's main menu.
No loader in the profile name? Then it's plain Minecraft, and these mods won't run — you need Fabric or NeoForge installed first.

Note: This is the recommended method to set up the mod. If you prefer other options, see the How to Play section below.

About

CobbleBrain is a mod that gives Pokémon a “brain,” allowing them to think, talk, and interact dynamically with the world. It integrates artificial intelligence into gameplay, making your companions talk to you, react to battles, protect you from mobs and even cook a delicious steak, all of that using your prompt.

Wild Pokémon can also interact with the player and the world, creating quests, remembering your actions, and reacting to how you treat their species.

You can also fully customize each Pokémon's personality through the built-in Personality Editor, allowing every companion to develop a unique identity.

Features

Quests

Wild Pokémon may approach you and start small quests, such as:

Completing quests may reward the player with items or gifts.

Karma System

Each Pokémon species tracks your behavior.

Karma influences how Pokémon react to you in future interactions.
To disable the karma system, go to the mod settings and turn off enable karma.

Raids

If your karma with a species becomes lower than -8, that species may organize a raid.
A raid spawns multiple Pokémon that will attempt to defeat the player.

Worse karma = stronger raids.

To disable raids, go to the mod settings and turn off schedule raids.

How to Play

You can choose to play using cloud models or local models.

A. Cloud Mode (Recommended)

Cloud mode uses external AI providers to process dialogue.

1. Player2 App (recommended)

Player2 includes a free amount of energy, which can be replenished daily using a spinner. You can also choose the AI model that best fits your needs. In general, more expensive models are smarter.

Here is a youtube tutorial!

2. Other Providers (Google AI Studio, OpenAI, OpenRouter, etc.)

Here is a youtube tutorial!

B. Local Mode

Local mode allows you to run models directly on your machine using LM Studio or Player2.

See the CobbleBrain GitHub README for detailed setup instructions.

C. Offline Mode

Play CobbleBrain without an AI connection.

Starting with version 1.4.0, you can enable Offline Mode and Offline Talk Mode to enjoy an adapted gameplay experience without internet access or an AI provider.

While AI-powered conversations are unavailable, many gameplay mechanics continue to work, allowing you to interact with your Pokémon, use actions, complete quests, and enjoy the mod offline.

How to enable it:

  1. Open the Config Menu by pressing Y.
  2. Enable Offline Mode.
  3. (Recommended) Enable Offline Talk Mode for Pokémon dialogue and reactions.

Note: Using an AI provider is still recommended for the full CobbleBrain experience. Offline Talk Mode will continue to receive improvements and new features in future updates.

How to Trigger Actions

Use the action HUD to make all your Pokémon perform the chosen action or encourage Pokémon through chat to perform actions!

Example: Squirtle, defend me! / Bulbasaur, want to eat some berries I dropped?

Primary Type-based Actions

These actions only work when the Pokémon has the right primary type.
Example: Charizard (fire, flying) can use cook, but Chandelure (ghost, fire) cannot.

General Actions

These actions work with any pokemon!

Configuration

CobbleBrain can be configured directly in-game through the mod config menu screen. You can open it by pressing Y or typing /cobblebrain openConfig in chat.

There you can customize:

Advanced users can still edit the generated configuration files in the /config folder if needed.
For the full list of variables and explanations, please check the CobbleBrain README on GitHub.

FAQ

Pokémon are not responding. What should I check?

Enable Debug Logging in the mod settings, send another message using /mpk, then check: cobblebrain-ai/logs Most issues are caused by:
  • Invalid API key

  • LM Studio server not running

Pokémon responses are too slow. Why?

Response speed depends on model size, provider traffic, internet connection and prompt size. See the question below to learn how to speed up the responses.

How can I reduce AI costs and token usage?

  • Enable Low Token Mode
  • Disable "unnecessary" AI Capabilities
  • Use smaller models
  • Shorten custom instructions

Can I play without an AI or internet connection?

Yes. Since v1.4.0, CobbleBrain includes Offline Mode and Offline Talk Mode, allowing you to play without an AI provider or an internet connection.

Offline Mode keeps many gameplay mechanics available, while Offline Talk Mode lets Pokémon communicate using built-in dialogue and world-aware reactions.

For the best experience, however, using an AI provider is still recommended.

Does the mod collect personal data?

No. CobbleBrain only sends prompts to the AI provider you choose and receives responses back.

Can I use CobbleBrain on multiplayer servers?

Yes. It is recommended that each player uses their own AI provider instead of sharing a single AI instance.
