Hindsight
block logging, inspection, and rollback — with a preview before anything changes
block logging, inspection, and rollback — with a preview before anything changes
Hindsight records who changed what, where, and when — then lets you inspect it, search it, and reverse it. A modern CoreProtect-style alternative for Paper servers: fully async storage, clickable chat output, and a ghost-block preview before every rollback so you see the result before it happens.
Why Hindsight
- Preview before every rollback. Rollbacks render as client-side ghost blocks first, with clickable ✔ confirm / ✘ cancel in chat. Nothing touches the world until you confirm — previews expire on their own if you walk away.
- /hs undo. Every rollback and restore captures exact prior states. Undo puts them back; undoing again redoes.
- Clickable everything. Lookup rows have hover cards (exact timestamp, full block data, position) and click-to-teleport. Page buttons in chat. Result counts flash in the action bar while inspecting.
- Chests come back full. Container contents (full NBT — enchantments, custom names, shulker innards) and sign text are captured at destruction and restored on rollback.
- Zero main-thread disk I/O. Events flow through a bounded queue into a dedicated writer thread, batched into WAL-mode SQLite transactions. Lookups run on a separate reader thread. Rollbacks apply on a per-tick block budget (default 1000/tick) so TPS never dips.
What gets logged
Block place & break • buckets (including waterlogging) • explosions, attributed to the player who lit the TNT when one did ( #creeper / #tnt otherwise) • TNT being primed • fire • fluid flow destroying blocks • pistons ( #piston) • endermen, zombie doors, and other mob changes • crop trampling, by name • container transactions with item + count (hoppers included) • sign text • item frames, paintings & armor stands • kills of named animals and pets.
Commands
Code (Text):
/hs inspect (/hs i) toggle inspector — left-click a block for its history,
right-click a face for what stood there
/hs lookup <player|#radius|world> [time] [action]
e.g. /hs lookup Steve 2d break · /hs lookup #20 8h
/hs lookup #creeper 1d
/hs near [radius] recent activity around you
/hs rollback <player|#cause|*> <radius> <time> [action]
ghost preview first, then confirm
/hs restore <player|#cause|*> <radius> <time> [action]
re-apply rolled-back changes
/hs undo revert your last rollback/restore (run again to redo)
/hs status queue depth, row count, db size, writes/sec
/hs purge <time> delete history older than the given age

Permissions
hindsight.* grants everything; each subcommand has its own hindsight.command.<name> node (inspect, lookup, near, rollback, restore, undo, status, purge). Everything defaults to op — safe out of the box.
Installation
- Drop the jar into plugins/.
- Restart the server. First boot downloads the SQLite driver from Maven Central (one time — the server needs internet access for it), creates plugins/Hindsight/config.yml plus the database, and starts logging immediately.
- Optionally grant permission nodes with LuckPerms; otherwise only ops can use it.
Requirements & honest limitations
- Paper only — Hindsight uses the Paper API throughout and will not load on Spigot. Built and tested on Paper 26.1.x with Java 25.
- Sign edits are logged, but rollback restores the text of destroyed signs only — a rewritten sign keeps its new text.
- Items inside item frames and armor stand equipment aren't restored (the frames and stands themselves are logged and searchable).
- Falling sand/gravel landings aren't tracked, and dispenser-placed fluids aren't attributed.
- TNT fired from cannons or primed by redstone logs as #tnt — vanilla loses the igniter through redstone chains. The damage rolls back fine; find the shooter from the named TNT placements at the cannon. (CoreProtect has the same limitation.)
- SQLite storage only — no MySQL or cross-server sync, and no WorldEdit integration yet.
