Because your dog deserves better than dying in a ravine!

Bell of Companions turns your tamed pets into real adventure partners. Register them with a tap, call them back from anywhere, and watch them grow stronger, and more independent, the longer you explore together.

Whether it's the wolf that keeps falling off cliffs or the cat you spent an hour taming, this mod means you never have to lose them for good!

Development Status

Unfortunately, development of Bell of Companions is currently paused.

During the development of version 1.5.0, I lost the project files due to a Windows issue. The 1.5.0 update was planned to be a much larger update than what is currently available, and this description includes some of the features that were already in progress. Recovering or rebuilding the project would require starting again from version 1.4.0, which would mean losing a significant amount of development work.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this mod. I genuinely enjoyed working on it, and I hope I can continue it someday.

FEATURES title

TL;DR

PET TAGGER

Use the Pet Tagger on any tamed animal to register it. It works with or without a Name Tag in your inventory. If you are holding one, tagging opens a naming prompt and registers the pet in a single step (Creative mode skips the requirement entirely). By default, hostile and boss mobs are excluded, but server owners can enable tagging on non-tameable mobs in the config if they want to register absolutely anything.

PET BELL

Your ultimate "come here" tool. Use it as a handheld item, or place it as a block on a floor, wall, or ceiling. Fully redstone-compatible for automated recall setups.

Living Bonds

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

The longer you adventure together, the stronger your pet becomes. Every pet has one or more Archetypes that determine how it earns bond XP and what it gains from leveling up:

Archetype Earns XP by Bonus per level
Fighter Killing hostile mobs +Attack Damage, +HP
Guardian Taking damage +Armor, +HP
Scout Exploring & moving +Speed, +Follow Range
Support Staying close to you +HP, +Armor
Forager Just existing +Luck, +Follow Range

Every vanilla mob has an archetype assigned by default, including hostile mobs, if non-tameable tagging is enabled.

Exact XP rates & stat bonuses

Activity is checked roughly every 10 seconds:

Bond levels cost 150 / 250 / 400 / 600 XP respectively - 1,400 XP total to reach Soulbound.

If a pet goes more than 24 hours without earning any bond XP, its XP gain is halved until it earns XP again, so even slower archetypes like Forager stay on track with regular play.

Leveling up triggers a particle burst and a chat message. Bond level and XP progress are also visible per-pet in the Pet List (e.g. Companion (42%)).

Pets currently gain passive stat bonuses based on archetype and bond level. Active combat abilities and healing auras are planned for a future update.

Soulbound

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

At max bond level, pets gain three permanent passives:

Petting

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

Shift + right-click any tagged living mob with an empty hand to pet it. A little squish animation plays, your pet makes its ambient sound softly, and you get a small arm swing. It also resets the pet's neglect timer and grants +3 bond XP on a 30-second cooldown. Heart particles are available but off by default - toggle them in the config if you want the extra flair.

Pet List (Press B)

A full, searchable registry of every pet you've ever tagged, including unloaded or dead ones.

Totem of Revitalization

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

A stackable item that revives your pets from (not so) permanent death.

Use it on a living, tagged pet to charge them. If they die while charged, the death is cancelled, they revive at 20% HP right in front of you with totem particles and sound, and the charge is consumed. You can stack multiple totems on the same pet to bank several saves in a row. The same item is also what the Pet List spends to bring back a pet that has already died.

When a charge is actually spent, the totem's eyes and heat glow light up and pulse for about two seconds before fading. This only happens during a real revival, not when you're charging a pet up.

A Dormant Totem variant can be found in loot chests. Evokers have a 50/50 chance to drop either a Totem of Undying or a Totem of Revitalization, and the Dormant version can also appear in Woodland Mansion, Bastion, Ancient City, and other structure chests (see config loot tables). Upgrade it into a full Totem of Revitalization with 2 diamonds and a poppy, or reverse-craft it back into 6 sticks if you'd rather not bother.

Co-Ownership

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

Want to share a pet with a friend? Use the Pet Tagger on someone else's registered pet to send a co-ownership request. They'll get a chat notification and can accept by right-clicking the pet with their Tagger while the request is pending, or sneak + Tagger to decline.

Accepted co-owners are saved to the world registry and show a Co-owner badge in the Pet List. Co-owners can recall and interact with the pet, but untagging, removing, reviving, and managing ownership stay with the primary owner, who can revoke individual co-owners from the Pet List or revoke everyone at once with sneak + Tagger on the live pet.

⚠️ Co-ownership is new and hasn't been heavily multiplayer-tested yet. If you try it on a server or LAN world, please report anything odd - requests, accepting, declining, revoking, or badges not surviving a reload.

Commands

Advancements

A custom advancement tree guides you naturally through the mod:

Getting Started

  1. Craft a Pet Tagger and Pet Bell.
  2. Tame a pet and tag it.
  3. Adventure together - pet, fight, explore - and watch them grow.
  4. Use the bell whenever they wander off.
  5. Open the Pet List (B) anytime to manage your growing family.

All settings live in Mod Menu, split across five tabs: General, Bell, Visuals, Pets, and Tagging & Registry.

For Developers

-- ⚠️ ADDED IN 1.5.0 (not available yet - see Development Status above)

A public BellOfCompanionsApi is available for registering custom taggable entities, attaching per-level bond buffs, and assigning bond archetypes. It exposes bond-level constants and helpers (getBondLevelName(), isBondMaxLevel(), getBondLevelCount(), getBondLevel(), isTagged(), and more), plus an event system (PetTagEvent, PetRecallEvent, PetBondEvent) for hooking into tagging, recall, and bonding. Full docs and usage examples on the GitHub repository.
