This mod will let you combine any armour piece with an elytra in a crafting table letting you have the protection of your armour with your elytra.

Elytrafy

This Mod will allow you to combine you elytra & any chestplate in a crafting table allowing you to be able to fly around with the protection of your chestplate.

The Crafting Recipe For A Gliding Chestplate

There is also a version that does need a nether star here
