You can see that mobs may turn directly into zombies after dying. When zombies spawn, they can carry equipment and weapons. They can now break blocks and build themselves up. When idle, they may keep digging down nonstop (maybe a bug? They can even break blocks that are unbreakable in Survival Mode!). Use /zombiedifficulty to adjust the difficulty.
