magma melting and dripstone sharpening
cook gravel into magma, and magma into lava using a furnace. you can also sharpen dripstone into points in a stone cutter.

magma+bucket in crafting makes a magma bucket. put that in a furnace again to make lava, or use it to place magma on the floor to get it back.
you can also use your stonecutter to cut dripstone blocks into pointed dripstones! no dripstone blocks? just add ice to ordinary stone to get it.
