Who Are Snails? Snails are fascinating gastropod mollusks characterized by their coiled shells, which serve as protective, mobile homes. Found in oceans, freshwater, and on land, these slow-moving creatures belong to one of the most diverse animal groups on Earth. They lack bones and rely on a muscular "foot" to glide smoothly over surfaces, secreting a trail of mucus to reduce friction.

What and How Do They Eat? Most snails are herbivores or detritivores, meaning they consume living plant matter and decaying materials. Instead of jaws, they possess a specialized organ called a radula—a ribbon-like tongue covered in thousands of microscopic, chitinous teeth used to scrape food into their mouths.

Land Snails: Feast on fresh leaves, flowers, rotting wood, bark, fungi, and fallen fruit.

Aquatic Snails: Primarily consume algae, biofilm, and decomposing aquatic plants.

The Hunters: A few marine species, like the cone snail, are carnivores that hunt fish and worms using venomous harpoons.
