Goodies Radar

by wuzimu7171_ · on Modrinth

Adds three new items to the game. Each will help you find what you need but balanced enough so it doesn't become a cheat.

This mod adds three handheld scanning tools — the Ore Radar, the Structure Radar, and the Biome Radar — plus the Radar Battery that powers them. Tune one to a specific ore, structure, or biome, carry it around, and it beeps faster and higher-pitched the closer you get to a match. It's a low-effort way to point yourself in the right direction without turning resource-finding into an instant answer.

Ore Radar

A device you tune to a single ore type at a time. While held (main hand or off-hand), it periodically scans the blocks around you and plays a beep — the beep speeds up and rises in pitch as you close in on the nearest match, and slows to a lazy idle tick when nothing's in range. Search range and battery drain both scale with rarity, so this isn't a way to long-range-scan for diamonds the way you could for coal:

Tier Ores Max range Battery drain Runtime per battery
Common Coal, Iron, Copper 64 blocks 1.0x ~60 min
Uncommon Redstone, Lapis Lazuli, Gold 40 blocks 1.5x ~40 min
Rare Diamond, Emerald, Nether Quartz 24 blocks 2.5x ~24 min
Very Rare Ancient Debris 16 blocks 4.0x ~15 min

It only scans chunks that are already loaded, so it won't force-generate terrain just to hunt for ore. Gold is tunable in both the Overworld and the Nether — the radar automatically searches for whichever variant (regular or Nether Gold Ore) actually generates in the dimension you're in.

Structure Radar

Same idea, but tuned to a structure category instead of an ore — village, shipwreck, stronghold, ancient city, and 17 others. It uses the same structure-locating logic as vanilla's /locate command, so results are accurate to actual generated structures rather than a rough guess. Because that lookup is expensive, it's re-run periodically in the background (every few seconds) rather than every tick, and it can generate new chunks while searching, the same way /locate or an Eye of Ender would.

Tier Structures Max range Battery drain Runtime per battery
Common Village, Ruined Portal, Mineshaft, Shipwreck, Ocean Ruins, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Temple, Igloo, Swamp Hut 512 blocks 1.0x ~60 min
Uncommon Pillager Outpost, Ocean Monument, Buried Treasure, Nether Fortress, Nether Fossil 320 blocks 1.5x ~40 min
Rare Woodland Mansion, Bastion Remnant, Stronghold, Trail Ruins, End City 192 blocks 2.5x ~24 min
Very Rare Trial Chambers, Ancient City 96 blocks 4.0x ~15 min

Biome Radar

An upgraded Ore Radar tuned to a biome instead of an ore or structure — over 60 biomes across the Overworld, Nether, and End, from common base biomes like Plains and Nether Wastes up to tightly-parametered ones like Ice Spikes, Cherry Grove, and Deep Dark. Like the Structure Radar, it uses vanilla's own biome-locating logic (the same thing behind /locate biome), so it can generate new chunks while searching and is re-run periodically in the background rather than every tick. Only biomes that can actually generate in your current dimension show up as selectable, so you won't end up tuning it to something you can't possibly find from where you're standing.

Tier Biomes Max range Battery drain Runtime per battery
Common Plains, Forest, Desert, Taiga, Savanna, Ocean, and 8 others 512 blocks 1.0x ~60 min
Uncommon Flower Forest, Mangrove Swamp, Badlands, Warped Forest, Crimson Forest, and 20 others 320 blocks 1.5x ~40 min
Rare Ice Spikes, Cherry Grove, Lush Caves, Dripstone Caves, Soul Sand Valley, and 11 others 192 blocks 2.5x ~24 min
Very Rare Mushroom Fields, Deep Dark, and 4 End sub-biomes 96 blocks 4.0x ~15 min

Radar Battery

All three radars need one of these dropped into a battery slot to actively search — with no battery inserted, a tuned radar just clicks uselessly instead of beeping, so you know at a glance it's dead rather than just quiet. It's a real damageable item, not a stack of charge units: it wears down while a target is selected (idle mode with nothing tuned costs nothing), drains faster for rarer targets per the tables above, and breaks and disappears once fully spent, exactly like a pickaxe running out of durability. Its tooltip shows remaining charge as a color-coded percentage (green → yellow → red), and once it drops to 20% both the tooltip and the radar itself (three quick warning beeps) let you know before it dies mid-search.

How to use it

Right-click any radar to open its GUI. Pick a target from the grid, set a search range (bounded by that target's own max range), drop a Radar Battery into the battery slot, and confirm. From then on just carry the radar — it works in either hand, and each hand tracks its own independent beep timer, so dual-wielding two tuned radars (say, an Ore Radar and a Biome Radar together) doesn't make them interfere with each other.

Crafting

All four items use standard crafting table recipes:

Ore Radar craft

Structure Radar craft

All four are also available directly from the Tools and Utilities creative tab.

Why grab this

If you like the idea of a guided search without a straight-up "teleport me to the loot" tool, this fills that gap — you still have to travel to the ping, dig through stone to reach it, and manage a battery that runs out, but you're not wandering blind or strip-mining a whole layer hoping to get lucky. The audio-only feedback also means you can leave it running in the background while you build or fight and just listen for the beep to speed up.
