Retold

Retold is an experimental total-conversion NeoForge mod that reimagines Minecraft as an alternative evolution of the 1.0 era.

Instead of treating dimensions, mobs, structures and progression as unrelated additions, Retold connects them through one world history. Defeating the Ender Dragon is not the end—it permanently changes the world and begins a new progression toward the unstable dimension known as the Aender.

Retold is not official Minecraft lore and is not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft.

What changes?

• Three world stages with permanent progression changes
• A Water Element path through ocean monuments and elder guardians
• An Air Element path featuring the Air Temple and Gale Core encounter
• A dragon-egg ritual that opens the way to Stage 3
• The Aender: a bright, unstable dimension of floating islands
• Bidirectional horizontal Aender portals with 8:1 coordinate scaling
• Terrain that can change between visits unless stabilized
• More reactive mobs with homes, hunger, hunting, fleeing, factions and territory
• Recipe discovery and villager teaching systems
• Rain-extinguished torches that can be relit
• Stage-dependent changes to undead, piglins, structures and world rules

Current development status

Retold is currently in alpha and is not feature-complete.

The current Aender texture set consists of AI-generated placeholder artwork and does not represent the intended final visual quality.

Water and Air progression are playable. The planned Fire and Earth Element paths, additional Aender rewards, broader progression changes and several world-generation removals are still in development.

Existing worlds may work, but making a backup is strongly recommended. New worlds provide the most reliable experience while development continues.

Requirements

• Minecraft 26.2
• NeoForge 26.2.0.7-beta or compatible
• Java 25
• Retold must be installed on both the server and connecting clients
• No additional mods are currently required

AI-assisted development and quality

Retold uses AI-assisted implementation and documentation under human direction. Project direction, game design, assets and release decisions remain under maintainer control.

GitHub Actions builds the project and runs unit tests and NeoForge GameTests. Manual playtesting and verification are ongoing. Bugs and incomplete behavior should be reported through the public issue tracker.

Modpacks and licensing

Complete, unmodified Retold JAR files may be included in modpacks.

The source code and non-asset materials are MIT-licensed. Textures, audio, models and other protected creative assets may not be extracted, reused, modified or redistributed separately. See the full licence for exact terms.
