When people think of famous heavy cruisers Takao and her sister Atago likely are one of the first ships to come to mind, Atago has become infamous enough that some may even mistakenly say Atago class, This misconception comes from her service history ferrying high level japanese leaders from the emperor to the Vice admiral before Japan did the cardinal sin of touching America's boats where she, Choukai and a few other floating reefs went to purse “Force z” and attack the British fleet of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse among other boats but was called off when a large sortie of planes sunk the above.
Later on, however Atago is nearly attacked by a US submarine but the Atago and allies escape without conflict. On the 2nd march 1942 Atago and her allies mistake USS PILLSBURY as a friendly before opening up at close range taking her first enemy down in the pacific. Not much happens for a time as Atago and her sisters chase Doolittle's fleet for retaliation but are unsuccessful in getting revenge for Tokyo.
Towards the end of 42, Atago and others are at the The Second Battle of Guadalcanal Takao and Atago play footsie with the USS Washington but do little more than Cosmetic damage to the North Carolina Class Battleship and kite away beyond detectability range to fight another day. Atago took only one 12 inch round to her food storage but overall was mostly unscaved, well until the attack of Rabaul where Atago got to play hide and seek with 97 angry yanks trying to drop warheads on foreheads. Fortunately for Atago she only lost 22 of her crew that day before continuing on. Avoiding a couple US submarines one of which is the USS Dace and lives on borrowed time. Atago’s third act is quite uneventful however most notably mistakenly firing at a friendly carrier in operation “A-GO”
Ultimately Atago's plot armor would run out however as passing through the Palawan passage Atago would eat four danger noodles from Darter sinking Atago in minutes. Taking the lives of 360 men.
