What it does is turns off "online-mode" for LAN servers, and stops people connecting from getting the "The authentication servers are down for maintanince" error. Unfortunatly, LAN worlds dont seem to show up to the person connecting, so you'll have to use your IP as of yet.
You then have to direct-connect to the person, using thier IP and port, which are shown when a game is opened.
