PARANOIA-AYBW (Paranoia: Are You Being Watched)
Paranoia-AYBW is a psychological horror mod built around a dynamic sanity system, player behavior tracking, and unsettling atmospheric shifts. Instead of relying purely on jumpscares, it focuses on building tension, paranoia, and a constant feeling of being stalked.
Sanity System and Atmosphere
Your sanity is a constant factor. It drops based on darkness, proximity to anomalies, and exposure to disturbing events. As sanity declines, the environment changes:
- Heavy, localized fog rolls in, restricting visibility.
- VHS static, UI corruption, and screen flickers distort your view.
- The audio design shifts, introducing quiet footsteps that mimic yours, distant whispers, heartbeat pulses, and low ambient drones.
- At critically low sanity levels, the mod plays psychological tricks on the player, such as sending fake OpenGL/LWJGL error codes in chat, generating cryptic log files on your real desktop, and executing fake game crashes.
Behavior Tracking and AI
The mod tracks your playstyle in real time. It monitors if you are camping in one spot, running away constantly, or looking around in a paranoid pattern. Stalking entities (like the Stalker, Demon, Watcher, Killer, and Shadow) adapt to these patterns:
- Stalkers will appear in your blind spot and freeze when you look directly at them.
- If you camp, entities will spawn close by to force you to move.
- If you run constantly, entities will spawn directly in front of you.
Mimic Animals
The horror extends to passive animals. Cows, sheep, chickens, and pigs have a chance to spawn as mimics (or convert into them during low sanity events).
- Mimics look identical to regular animals from a distance, but their skins are visibly glitched with noise and color distortions.
- Their ambient and hurt sounds are heavily pitched down, warped, or replaced with whispering and giggling.
- When approached, they cease passive behaviors, charge at the player with high speed, lunge to attack, and trigger aggressive full-screen screamers.
World Structures and Anomalies
The mod generates unique, atmospheric structures in the world:
- Abandoned Cabins, Sacrificial Altars, and Graveyards.
- Chests in these locations contain custom creepy artifacts (like old keys, ritually carved daggers, pocket watches, and bloody bandages) that play into the lore.
- Interacting with these areas or holding certain items can trigger further anomalies.
