TFGF

Tool familiarity for TerraFirmaGreg. Practice, maintenance, and technique.

Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge 47+ License

TFGF, short for TerraFirmaGreg Familiarity, makes a well-used GTCEu tool feel meaningfully different from a fresh one. Familiarity belongs to the individual tool, grows through appropriate work, survives repair, and unlocks practical benefits that come from knowing its balance and maintaining it well. In short, TFGF makes your tools truly yours and rewards sticking with one tool instead of making duplicates. It also looks to introduce further realism into tool usage rather than merely crafting. Making tools is expensive, let's make them worth it.

Why?

Vanilla enchantments often solve tool progression with unexplained magic. Well, it does fit in the design of Minecraft because there are other "supernatural" elements to the game. However, Terrafirmacraft and TerrafirmaGreg by extension are more grounded in reality. Therefore we throw enchantments out entirely, however, what about the mastery?

TFGF fits TerraFirmaGreg's grounded loop instead. There aren't any flaming blades, conjured drops, magnetic experience or supernatural reach. What TFGF provides is mastery.

Familiarity reward Practical effect Replaces the role of
Familiar Handling Up to 25% faster correct-tool mining Efficiency
Work Rhythm Up to 10% more speed while repeating one material High-level efficiency
Careful Handling Up to 15% chance to avoid action wear at mastery Unbreaking
Balanced Strikes Up to +1.5 attack damage Sharpness
Practiced Cadence Up to +10% attack speed General weapon handling
Deliberate Timing Up to 12% more damage on a fully committed hit Critical specialization
Guard Break A small familiarity-scaled chance to disable a raised shield Combat utility

Requirements

NOTE: TFGF is intended for TerraFirmaGreg-style packs and only recognizes supported GTCEu tool types.

Installation

  1. Install the required mods and their dependencies, or alternatively, install TerraFirmaGreg-Modern.
  2. Place the TFGF JAR in the instance or server mods directory.
  3. Start the game once to generate config/tfgf-common.toml.

Familiarity progression and balance configuration is on the server side configuration file. Clients still need to have this mod installed for networked feedback and tooltips.

Commands

Administrative mutation commands require permission level 2.

Progression

Familiarity levels

Familiarity XP is stored on each individual tool and capped at the final rank.

Level Rank Total XP
0 Novice 0
1 Apprentice 150
2 Journeyman 450
3 Expert 1,000
4 Artisan 1,900
5 Master 3,300
6 Grandmaster 5,400
7 Legendary 8,400
8 Mythic 12,600
9 Transcendent 18,600
10 Ethereal 28,000

Earning XP

Action Base XP
Break a block with a supported GTCEu tool 1
Land a direct melee hit with a supported weapon 1
Kill with a direct melee hit 1

Projectiles and indirect damage do not train the held weapon. XP is calculated before integer rounding, so a base value of 1 will usually remain 1 until enough multipliers accumulate.

Practice multipliers

Per-action caps default to 3 XP for breaking and 4 XP for attacking or killing. Repeated breaking at the same position is rate-limited, and its tracking state is pruned continuously.

Rewards

Shared: Careful Handling

Careful Handling unlocks at level 3. After vanilla or GTCEu applies wear for a qualifying mining action or direct melee hit, TFGF can refund one point of that wear. The chance scales with familiarity:

15% * (level / 10)

That is 4.5% at level 3 and 15% at level 10. It models fewer bad angles and less wasted force, filling Unbreaking's role without making the tool indestructible.

Mining tools

Familiar Handling affects only blocks for which the held tool is correct:

mining speed = original speed * (1 + 2.5% * level * miningSpeedMultiplier)

The default maximum is +25% at level 10.

Work Rhythm unlocks at level 3. Consecutive work on the same block material adds linearly up to +10% mining speed at a 16-block streak. Switching materials resets the streak. It rewards a steady workflow without breaking adjacent blocks, creating resources, moving drops, extending reach, or removing environmental penalties.

Weapon tools

These mechanics intentionally avoid fire, potion effects, lifesteal, conjured loot, magical armor bypass, and random critical-hit bursts.

Dual-purpose tools

Dual-purpose tools participate in mining and weapon progression. Weapon attribute bonuses use dualBuffEfficiency, which defaults to 50%; mining speed, Tool Memory, and Careful Handling use their normal rules.
