IMAGEMOTD

USE PNG IMAGES AS YOUR MINECRAFT SERVER MOTD

Turn a simple 264x16 PNG into a full-width image banner.

WHAT IS IMAGEMOTD?

ImageMOTD replaces the normal two-line server MOTD with a generated image banner on compatible clients.

Create your banner as a normal PNG, place it inside the ImageMOTD folder, run /imagemotd generate, and ImageMOTD handles the conversion for you.

Perfect for server logos, seasonal banners, announcements, launch messages, network branding and clean server-list designs.

MAIN FEATURES

HOW IT WORKS

A full ImageMOTD banner is 264x16 pixels.

ImageMOTD divides the image into 66 small 8x8 tiles and generates the Minecraft skin textures required to display those tiles in the server-list description.

Code (Text):

264x16.png
     ↓
33 tiles wide × 2 tiles high
     ↓
66 generated/cached textures
     ↓
Full server-list image banner

Once generated, the banner is cached locally.

QUICK SETUP

  1. Install ImageMOTD on your Paper or Purpur server.
  2. Start the server once.
  3. Place your banner here:

Code (Text):

plugins/ImageMOTD/264x16.png

Then run:

Code (Text):

/imagemotd generate

Check generation progress with:

Code (Text):

/imagemotd status

Once generation has finished, refresh your Minecraft server list to see the banner.

COMMANDS

Code (Text):

/imagemotd generate
/imagemotd status
/imagemotd reload

Aliases:

Code (Text):

/imgmotd
/pngmotd

PERMISSIONS

Code (Text):

Default: OP

FALLBACK MOTD

Clients outside the configured full-banner protocol range can automatically receive a normal text MOTD instead.

Default:

Code (Text):

&d&lEXAMPLE SERVER
&fLine 2

You can edit both lines in config.yml.

You can also configure passthrough behavior or enable the alternate PNG fallback renderer.

CONFIGURATION

Code (Text):

banner:
  source-file: 264x16.png
  generated-file: motd.json
  auto-resize: true
  min-protocol: 773
  max-protocol: 775
  upload-delay-ms: 6200
  mineskin-api-key: ''

fallback:
  mode: TEXT
  png-enabled: false
  png-mode: BRAILLE
  pixel-width: 68
  alpha-threshold: 24
  text-line-1: '&d&lEXAMPLE SERVER'
  text-line-2: '&fLine 2'

favicon:
  enabled: false
  file: favicon.png

GENERATION & CACHING

The first full-banner generation can take several minutes because Minecraft skin textures must be generated for the unique 8x8 tiles.

Use:

Code (Text):

/imagemotd status

to follow the progress.

ImageMOTD stores generated tile data in its cache. If you later change only part of your banner, unchanged tiles can be reused instead of being generated again.

MineSkin is used for skin-texture generation. An API key is optional and can be supplied in the configuration if desired.

SERVER ICON SUPPORT

ImageMOTD can also manage the normal Minecraft 64x64 server favicon.

Simply enable it in the configuration and replace:

Code (Text):

plugins/ImageMOTD/favicon.png

with your own 64x64 PNG.

COMPATIBILITY

Java: 21

Recommended server software:
Paper / Purpur

Full-banner mode:
Designed for compatible 1.21.9-1.21.11 clients. The protocol range is configurable.

Clients outside the selected range use your configured fallback instead of receiving a broken server-list response.

IMPORTANT

The full image method relies on Minecraft server-list component behavior that is client-version sensitive.

ImageMOTD therefore includes a fallback system rather than forcing the image onto incompatible clients.

The plugin itself does not require a resource pack.
