No Inventory Facility
No Inventory Facility (NIF) is a Minecraft mod built around a simple idea: what if you didn't have an inventory at all?
Instead of relying on the traditional inventory and hotbar, NIF introduces a physical two-hand item system. Items are carried directly in your hands, with the main hand and offhand becoming the center of your item management.
👐 A Different Way to Carry Items
NIF removes the traditional inventory interface and replaces it with a more physical approach to item handling.
Your main hand and offhand are no longer just extensions of the vanilla hotbar. They are the places where your items actually exist.
Items can occupy either hand, while larger or classified two-handed items require both hands to be free.
This creates a simple rule:
If you want to carry something, you need to actually have a hand available for it.
🎒 No Traditional Inventory
The vanilla inventory screen is disabled, and the traditional hotbar is removed.
There is no scrolling through dozens of slots to find the item you need. Your available equipment is limited to what you're currently carrying.
This is intended to make item management feel more deliberate and physical rather than purely menu-based.
✋ Two-Handed Items
Some items are classified as two-handed based on their properties.
A two-handed item cannot be picked up while either hand is occupied. When carried, it occupies the primary hand and requires both hands to remain available.
This system is still being expanded and refined, with more item classifications and interactions planned for future versions.
📦 Custom Item Pickup
Picking up items is handled through NIF's custom pickup system rather than the traditional inventory flow.
Pickup requests are validated server-side, including checks on the item entity and player distance, making the system suitable for multiplayer environments.
🖥️ Custom HUD
NIF also replaces several parts of the vanilla HUD with a custom interface.
The current Beta includes custom rendering for:
- Main-hand and offhand items
- Two-handed items
- Health
- Hunger
- Experience level
The HUD is intentionally still experimental. Its layout, sprites, animations, and visual language will continue to evolve as the mod develops.
🧪 Beta
NIF is currently in early public Beta.
The core concept and main item-handling systems are functional, but the mod is still under active development. Some vanilla animations and behaviors have not yet been reproduced, and the HUD is still being redesigned.
Expect bugs, visual changes, and mechanics that may evolve between versions.
The goal of the Beta is not just to provide a finished experience, but to let the system exist in the hands of actual players while it grows.
🗺️ What's Next?
Future development will focus on expanding the physical item system and giving NIF its own visual identity.
Planned areas include:
- More sophisticated hand and item interactions
- Expanded two-handed item rules
- Improved HUD design
- Custom HUD sprites and animations
- Better feedback when interacting with items
- More interactions that take advantage of the two-hand system
- Continued multiplayer and server-side improvements
NIF is still taking shape. The current Beta is the foundation.
