Note Blocks in vanilla Minecraft are frustratingly opaque: you can right-click one to cycle through 25 pitches and hear a sound, but there's no persistent, at-a-glance way to know which pitch you've landed on, what octave it corresponds to, or which instrument the block underneath it produces — short of memorizing the sound or breaking out a wiki page mid-build.
This addon solves that by attaching an invisible, non-colliding "display" entity to each Note Block that renders a floating name-tag directly above it. That name-tag is generated dynamically from the block's actual state, so it always reflects reality:
- Note name — The musical note (e.g.
F#3,C4,A#4) corresponding to the block's current pitch (0–24) - Instrument — Automatically detected from the block placed directly beneath the Note Block (the same logic vanilla Minecraft uses to decide the note block's sound), covering all 16 vanilla instruments (Harp, Bass, Bass Drum, Snare, Hi-Hat, Bell, Flute, Chime, Guitar, Xylophone, Iron Xylophone, Cow Bell, Didgeridoo, Bit, Banjo, Pling)
- Octave — Derived from the pitch
- Numeric pitch value — The raw 0–24 value, for players who think in redstone-tick terms rather than note names
Each of these elements can be individually toggled on or off, and the label's color, bold, and italic styling can be customized — either per-block or as a personal default that applies to every new label a player creates.
Core Features
- Automatic labeling — Placing a Note Block instantly spawns a matching display; breaking the block removes its display.
- Live pitch tracking — Right-clicking a Note Block (its normal vanilla behavior) still cycles its pitch, and the label updates to match immediately.
- Instrument auto-detection — The label re-reads the block underneath and updates if you change it, so the instrument shown is never stale.
- In-game configuration UI — Sneak-right-click a Note Block, or right-click it while holding the Note Display Configurator (a craftable item: 1 Book + 1 Amethyst Shard), to open a form where you can:
- Choose a text color (16 vanilla color codes)
- Toggle bold / italic
- Toggle visibility of the note, numeric pitch, octave, and instrument name independently
What Problem It Solves
Note Block music (redstone-driven songs, music machines, "note block statues," etc.) is a long-standing Minecraft Bedrock tradition, but building or debugging a tune is tedious because:
- Pitch is invisible - The only feedback for a Note Block's pitch is a sound and a small particle — you can't see it, compare it against neighboring blocks, or verify it without listening to each one individually.
- Instrument depends on an easy-to-forget rule - (the block underneath), so it's easy to place the wrong material and not notice until you hear the wrong sound.
- Large builds are hard to audit - In a multi-block contraption (song machines, note block "pixel art" instruments, puzzle maps, etc.), there's no way to visually scan a whole structure and confirm every block is tuned and voiced correctly.
Musical Note Display turns each Note Block into a self-labeling, self-explaining object — turning an audio-only, trial-and-error workflow into a visual one. Builders can look at a bank of Note Blocks and immediately read off the exact note, octave, and instrument of each one, making it dramatically faster to compose, verify, and troubleshoot Note Block music without ever needing external pitch/instrument reference charts.
