A live, customizable mini-map sits on the screen with Magnificent Minimap, a utility add-on for navigating the world. It follows player movement and can be shown as a circle or a rectangle, with several rendering styles to match your taste.
The map can track entities, show compass orientation and work in the Nether. It also supports an Atlas Map Container, a Map Atlas and a Map Placeholder for large-scale exploration. Experimental Features must be turned on because the add-on uses scripting APIs, UI Queue has to be present in the world, and both the behavior and resource packs must be applied.
