The Skeleton King – Epic Bosses addon introduces a formidable new challenge to the plains biomes, where players can encounter a powerful boss and earn unique rewards. This experience requires activating experimental features to enable its scripting APIs. Venturing into the plains, players will discover a mysterious floating torch, a focal point for summoning shadows. Engaging with this cursed torch initiates waves of four shadowy enemies. As these foes are defeated, they are absorbed by the torch, which purifies them and grants one charge, along with a new resource called Purified Fire. This valuable material is essential for crafting later on. The torch levels up for every four charges absorbed, progressing through four stages until it reaches its fifth, at which point the fearsome Skeleton King makes his appearance.

Upon its summoning, the Skeleton King engages players with a variety of dangerous abilities. It can summon a horde of six mini-skeletons that inflict a slowness effect and explode upon defeat, damaging non-undead entities. These smaller skeletons are protected by a shield and helmet that must be broken before they can take damage. The King also commands lightning strikes, targeting the nearest player or striking in a straight line, preceded by a brief particle warning. Another of its attacks involves creating a fiery prison around the nearest player, with a distinctive sound cue two seconds before the flames erupt in a hash-shaped pattern on the ground. Players must adapt quickly to these varied attacks to survive the initial encounter with this formidable skeletal monarch.

When the Skeleton King sustains critical damage, it enters a second phase, healing itself and transforming its sword into a powerful crossbow. In this darker, transformed state, bats swarm around the King, dealing damage to all non-skeleton entities. This signals a shift in strategy, encouraging players to maintain distance while continuing their assault. Periodically, a skeletal eye appears above the King, slowly restoring its health; destroying this eye with a projectile inflicts significant damage. The crossbow in this phase fires volleys of three arrows, each imbued with Instant Damage II, demanding careful evasion. Successfully defeating the King results in a final lightning strike, disarming it and yielding the powerful Skeleton Sword, a well-earned reward for overcoming such a challenging adversary.
