Chatbots answer your players. QuestSmith writes your server's content.
QuestSmith is a quest-generation tool, not an addon for one plugin. You type a one-sentence brief, review the generated draft in-game (per-quest dialog trees, objectives, rewards — accept, edit, or regenerate each section), then publish it to whichever system you run:
This is not a chatbot. This is not an NPC engine. It's a writer's assistant for server owners who want quest content without hand-writing it.
Features
Setup (2 minutes)
Commands & permissions
questsmith.play (default: everyone) — play published quests (quest log, dialogs)
Requirements
Proven on a live server
QuestSmith was built for a real server and verified in-game: a full quest completed end-to-end through the built-in runner (collect/kill/talk objectives, item rewards), a CustomNPCs publish with a linked quest giver, and a GUI-driven generation + publish pass on Paper 1.21.6.

QuestSmith is a quest-generation tool, not an addon for one plugin. You type a one-sentence brief, review the generated draft in-game (per-quest dialog trees, objectives, rewards — accept, edit, or regenerate each section), then publish it to whichever system you run:
- BetonQuest packages (1.18–1.21) — conversations, events, objectives. v1 scope: kill objectives and ITEM rewards; money/XP rewards and other objective types aren't exported yet (the AI can still write them into the draft — they publish through the built-in runner)
- CustomNPCs (Forge mod) JSON (1.12.2 build) — quests + dialogs for the modded world (linking a giver to an NPC is one documented line in the published file)
- Built-in quest runner — no quest plugin? QuestSmith runs the quest itself: objectives, progress tracking, rewards
This is not a chatbot. This is not an NPC engine. It's a writer's assistant for server owners who want quest content without hand-writing it.
Features
- One-sentence briefs — /qs gen with a short description; get a full quest pack draft in ~30 seconds
- Review GUI — quest list → per-quest dialog tree → objectives → rewards; accept, edit, or regenerate any section individually
- Publish anywhere — export to BetonQuest packages, CustomNPCs JSON, or the built-in runner
- Quest giver spawning — stand where you want them and spawn givers for the pack in a circle
- Gemini by default — free tier. Paste one key into config.yml
- OpenAI-compatible option — point it at any compatible endpoint (Claude, local models, etc.)
- Cost controls — per-generation token cap, configurable in config.yml
- Server context — one config line sets your world's theme/voice for every generation ("Set on a pirate archipelago; vanilla items only.")
- Operator-only — generation is gated behind questsmith.use; players never touch the API, keys stay server-side
- Economy-aware — money rewards only warn when no economy provider is present (Vault soft-depend)
- Internet + API key required at generation time — QuestSmith calls the Gemini API (free tier works) or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint when you generate a pack. Playing published quests needs no internet and no key.
Setup (2 minutes)
- Drop the jar in plugins/ and restart.
- Get a free Gemini key: https://aistudio.google.com/apikey
- Paste it into plugins/QuestSmith/config.yml.
- /qs gen pirate questline, 5 quests, gruff captain NPC, betrayal twist
- Review the draft, edit what you don't like, publish.
Commands & permissions
- /qs — open the GUI (draft review for ops, quest log for players)
- /qs gen <brief> — generate a quest pack draft
- /qs drafts — list saved drafts
- /qs pubrun <id> — publish a draft to the built-in runner
- /qs pubcustom <id> — publish a draft as CustomNPCs JSON
- /qs spawngivers — spawn quest-giver villagers for a pack, in a circle around you
- /qs deletedraft <id> — delete a draft
questsmith.play (default: everyone) — play published quests (quest log, dialogs)
Requirements
- Paper or Spigot 1.20–1.21 for the modern build (api-version: 1.13); separate 1.12.2 build included
- Java 17+ for the modern build; Java 8+ for the 1.12.2 build
- Optional: BetonQuest (for BQ export, 1.18–1.21), Vault (for money rewards)
