Roots & Runes is a cozy vanilla-plus survival pack built for players who want the world to feel bigger and more lived-in without being handed a quest log. Sprawling biomes and seasons to plan around, villages worth visiting, a kitchen worth filling, and a quiet thread of hedge magic running underneath it all. No skill trees, no classes, just a world that rewards paying attention to.

Before you start

• 16 GB RAM recommended (Distant Horizons will happily use more).
• Make sure to increase your RAM use in the Modrinth settings.
• Add -XX:+UseZGC -XX:+ZGenerational to your Java arguments
• First world load may take a while. The pack is generating a lot of terrain and streams.
• Shaders are supported and tested; Distant Horizons compatibility varies by shaderpack.
• Apply a shader preset on first launch (Video Settings > Shader Packs > Shader Pack Settings). The default settings are the heaviest, so pick the one that suits your PC:
  • High: all effects on
  • Medium: same features, lower quality
  • Low: lightest, still looks close to High

Performance

If FPS is low, try these in order before turning shaders and Distant Horizons off completely:

• Switch to the Low shader preset
• Lower Distant Horizons' render distance (128 chunks is a good start) and its thread count
• Turn off Distant Horizons' SSAO
• Lower render and simulation distance to 8–10
• Lower entity distance in Video Settings
