Craft yourself a pair of Night Vision Goggles with easy to find materials. Change the colour of the Dye to change the colour of the Goggles. 
Night Vision Goggles will give you the same protection and Durability as an Iron Helmet.
Place the Night Vision Goggles in your Helmet slot and the night is yours to explore.
