Magnets!
Have you ever wanted to grab items from a distance? Do you have 2 iron ingots, 3 redstone dust, and a lightning rod? Well, I have the perfect solution! Introducing the: Item Magnet (Magnet for short.) 
This handy device can be used to drag around any item that you can drop! Just look at where you'd like your items to go (that is if it is on the same height as the blocks, still works even if it isn't though) and your items will either fall into a hole or cross!
