All the tools get a refined look with Better Tools and Items, a texture pack that retextures the user interface, particles, blocks and items at the default 16x. It improves how essential items look without changing the core visual style much.
Swords, axes, pickaxes, shovels and hoes have redesigned textures, and so do apples, golden apples and enchanted golden apples. The pack also updates the sun and moon, decorative blocks such as wool and glass, and the mace and cake items. Everything stays at 16x, so the new textures fit in with the rest of the game.
