The Gruagach of Lough Leane was once a shapeshifting fairy warrior of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He fought giants Fomorians alongside the sons of Dagda, he was able to change into many shapes, and during the battle he took the form of a hulking monster, personally killing twenty of the Fomorians.
Later, he fell in love with a human girl who wanted to see his monstrous form. Although she was frightened, she held back her scream until a cat appeared and she cried out to warn him. According to an ancient law, her scream banished Gruagach to a misty purgatorial realm.
Trapped there for ages, Gruagach lost most of his power and became a shadow of his former self before eventually returning to the world. He first encounters Hellboy when he tries to replace a human baby, Alice Monaghan. Hellboy exposes his disguise and humiliates him, causing Gruagach to develop a deep hatred for him. Eventually, he becomes trapped in the body of the Fomorian named Grom and now resembles a stunted, mutant anthropomorphic boar creature. He blames Hellboy for his current state and seeks revenge for his humiliations. He is also driven by a desire to see his people returned to their former glory and would rather see the fairy folk die fighting for their survival instead of simply fading away in the shadow of the human race. Gruagach helps resurrect Nimue, the Queen of Blood, but his actions contribute to a devastating war that threatens his own people.
