Which Minecraft do you have?

Every version of the game needs its own build. Pick yours, then download — the wrong build installs fine and then does nothing in the game.

Open Minecraft and look at the bottom-left corner of the main screen — the version is printed there, like v1.26.30.
The game writes a 1. in front; the buttons above leave it off. v1.26.30 in the game is 26.30 here.

You spawn on a small planetoid with nothing but a sapling, some bonemeal, and a map. To get other resources including iron for a bucket and lava for a cobblestone generator, you must venture out to other planets.

Different planets will have different resources available. Larger planets are more likely to have larger moons, but also dangerous radiation belts if you get too recklessly close.

The Nether can be used as a mode of fast travel between the stars, if you know where you're going.
